Zongqi Xia , MD, PhD

Biography

Dr. Xia is a physician-scientist in the Pittsburgh Institute for Multiple Sclerosis Care and Research and in the Pittsburgh Institute of Neurodegenerative Diseases.  He is the Director of Research within the Division of Neuroimmunology in the University of Pittsburgh Department of Neurology. 

Dr. Xia received a Bachelor of Arts from Swarthmore College, both MD and PhD from Case Western Reserve University, and a Master in Clinical Investigation from Harvard Medical School.  He completed a Neurology residency at the Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital in 2009 and a post-doctoral fellowship in translational neuroimmunology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School and Broad Institute of Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2013.  He is a board-certified neurologist with subspecialty expertise in neuroimmunology. 

Building a research program that lies at the intersection between clinical neuroimmunology and data science, Dr. Xia and his team have been developing and refining a framework for effectively leveraging real-world data (e.g., prospectively collected multi-modal data from natural history cohorts, electronic health records data) for clinical discovery and have applied this framework to generate real-world evidence to address clinically relevant questions in multiple sclerosis and related disorders as well as COVID-19 and Alzheimer’s disease.
